Patriotic Rant (By Jafira) One thing that really gets on my nerves is when it is implied or outright spoken that you are unpatriotic whenever you criticize the actions of your government. Patriotism requires having pride in your country, you can't have pride in your country when it is doing something stupid, it is important to speak out against your countries actions if those actions are wrong, for example the Iraq war, three quarters of America are currently against the Iraq war, but the government currently in power refuses to listen, in a government that was designed to answer to the voters, which particular party is unpatriotic, the 75% of the country which disagrees with the actions of it's nation, or the leadership which refuses to acknowledge the demands of it's own citizens? If you think the leadership is correct and the people are wrong, you should question yourself as to why. In a nation where the populace which places it's government in power demands that it's own borders be secure in a time of war, it's economy be protected from the threats of outsourcing, foreign competitors, and illegal immigration, and that the dual party leadership in charge of the country work together for the common good rather then for the good of a left/right ideology, and demands answers to why in a free country its prisons are the most crowded in the world, and gets no response, something is wrong. When a populace asks these questions of it's government and is then accused of being non-patriotic, tell me, which party is the unpatriotic party, those questioning the short comings of a failing government, or those defending said government. One who is patriotic would do everything possible to see their country succeed in the world, which requires speaking out against mistakes of their countries leadership and demanding corrections. Ignoring present mistakes and citing past accomplishments in no way makes anyone patriotic, it makes them part of the problem, question your government, nag, pester, vote out, boycott, and do whatever else may be necessary to drive out corruption and make your country great, that is what patriotism is about, not blind obedience, when the economy is in danger, you don't go shopping, you demand solutions, when your country is occupying another country unjustly you demand they withdraw, when your country is oppressive in anyway to it's own citizens or others, you demand accountability. Unless you are willing to question authority and ignore the weak accusations of ignorance or un-patriotism, you will never create change in your country, and this rant is not simply for America, this goes for Cuba, China, Russia, the E.U, and any other country on earth, remember that the leaderships job is to protect you, not control you, protect the economy, not destroy it, protect sovereignty not destroy others, and to work for the common good of mankind, not work for the almighty dollar. People must work to change the world one step at a time, and that includes dismantling failing or flawed leadership. Never allow anyone to call you unpatriotic for criticizing your country for doing something that is not for the best benefit of it's people. You have every right to question leadership which is designed to serve you in the first place. ~Jafira Dragon |
